Wolves, Bears & Wolverines 2019

Wolves, Bears and Wolverines

In the wild forests of Finland very close to the Russian border, you will get with luck the amazing opportunity to photograph wild Brown bears, Wolves and the very unique Wolverine all from purpose built professional hides perfectly designed for photographers. These shy, iconic predators will go about their business around you, giving you a unique insight into their lives at the same time giving you some if not the best opportunities to photograph these rare and elusive predators.

Our base for this 6 day photo tour is Kuikka, in Finland, a former forest workers' residence close to the border with Russia. Surrounded by the lake of Kuikka as well as by boreal forest. The building is a traditional rural Finnish log house.

This is one of the best locations for photographing brown bears, wolves and wolverines anywhere in Europe. We will enter the hides in the late afternoon and remain in the hide overnight, leaving in time for breakfast the following morning.

Many of the hides are situated in the wetland, others in the forest. For those in the wetland, you’ll need rubber boots, hiking shoes to reach them, although there are wooden paths leading through the deep bog.

The vast majority of your time will be spent in the hides, rotating between our chosen hides to give each client the best opportunities to photograph the amazing wildlife here. I will spend time with every client during our hide time to make sure you’re ok with everything and happy.

This is one if not the best place to see ALL of these amazing predators in Finland. These animals have been coming to this venue for years crossing from the Russia border and although nothing is ever promised in wildlife here those dreams can come true.

So come and join me on this amazing, action packed, great value from money photo tour where I can promise you some amazing encounters and images of very hard, shy and difficult mammals. Along with a lot of other wildlife in beautiful light.

There are 7 rooms in our accommodation, with bunk beds. Due to the origin of the house, there are no single or double rooms as such. However, if you have any particular wish concerning your privacy, let me know. All bedding and towels are provided. In case of any allergies or special food habits, let me know in advance.

The sleeping quarters are warm and very comfortable and clean and are designed to get some sleep during the days as you will spending the evenings in the hides where you will be able to sleep also while we take it in turns to watch and watch for the bears, wolves and wolverines to appear.

There are 14 photo hides in Kuhmo most hides offering amazing opportunities for bears, wolves, wolverines and eagles. All the hides look a bit different, some are rather big and luxurious, and others are rather small for individual photography or filming.

All the images included in this workshop are taken at the place you will be going to. Offering some amazing chances to capture all three of these amazing animals up close and in front of your hide in different habitats.

Wolves and Wolverine in particular are amongst the shyest mammals in Europe and you need to bear this mind in terms of your expectations as both species are very unpredictable.

Itinerary

Day 1: Travel to Kajaani airport in Finland (we will advise you on our flight recommendations- FinAir,Flybe etc)) where we will be met by our Finnish host for the 2-3 hour transfer to Kuikka which will be our base for the duration of the trip. Once we arrive we’ll unpack and have lunch before heading straight out for our first encounter that evening. This will depend on what time we all reach our base.

Day 2/3/4/5: Each day/evening follows the same routine and after dinner we’ll leave for the hides again until the following morning. On the last hide day we will leave the hide on the 6th day and after breakfast take our transport back to the airport and head off back to the UK. Allow for a late evening flight which will maximise your time on the last day also allowing for the journey back to the airport.

Day 6: After our final night in the hide we’ll have time to shower and breakfast before returning to Kajaani airport for our flights home.

Recommended Kit

You will need to provide your own photographic equipment, a 500mm lens is ideal but a 300mm with convertors will meet your needs.

Bring a smaller zoom lens also so you can capture a bit more of the habitat within this amazing place. This beautiful area will give you many landscape opportunities so a wide angled lens will also be useful.

There is no tripod needed in a hide, since there is a device for installing your ball-head, which you’ll screw into a wooden board. In front of your camera there will be an opening through which you’ll put the lens outside.

You can rent Nikon cameras, lenses and converters from our base camp, please notify me in advance if you wish to do so.

Laptop (Wi-Fi at our accommodation) Memory cards, Tripod (only for photography outside the hides, Ball-heads for the photo hides. Rubber boots, hiking shoes. Warm clothes.
